Tottenham Hotspur have confirmed that Spurs midfielder Eric Dier has undergone surgery to remove his appendix after being diagnosed with appendicitis.

Dier, who was not named in the matchday squad for Spurs during the win over Burnley, was diagnosed with the problem after suffering acute abdominal pain.

The England international received immediate treatment from the medical staff at Tottenham, who assessed the situation before deciding on surgery to remove his appendix.

Dier will now undergo a recovery period before being able to commence rehabilitation in order to get back into contention to return to the first team.

However, early assessments suggest that the midfielder will not return to the squad for training until January as he continues to recover following the surgery.

The unavailability of Dier during such a testing period of the season will be a concern for Mauricio Pochettino, who handed out a full Premier League debut to Oliver Skipp in midfield against Burnley.

Dier, who is an integral member of the squad for both club and country at the moment, has made 17 appearances across all competitions for Spurs this term.

Tottenham continue to remain in third place in the Premier League and will next face rivals Arsenal in the EFL Cup on Wednesday before facing Everton, just three days later.
