Former Celtic attacker Krish Commons has raised the possibility that Brendan Rodgers was sending a message to the club's board during the Bhoys' 2-0 defeat at Hibernian.

Rodgers was unhappy with a lack of activity in the summer transfer window and lost striker Moussa Dembele to Lyon just before the window closed.

Against Hibernian, Rodgers went with Odsonne Edouard up top and brought the Frenchman off with 15 minutes to go, bringing on Michael Johnston, a teenager winger.

Commons thinks that the change, which put on clear display Rodgers' lack of attacking options, could well have been a clear message to the club's board as the January transfer window approaches quickly.

"I've mentioned Edouard's importance playing that number 9 role and if he's not playing it, you look at the bench and it's very limited for people that can come on and change the game", the former Celtic man said on Sky Sports Football.

"I thought it was quite ironic, with Brendan Rodgers coming out and saying in January he may need two strikers, that with 15 minutes to go he brought off his top goalscorer and brought on Mikey Johnston, who is not a striker.

"So, was that a little sign to say 'I need reinforcements, I need that cutting edge in the final third'."

And Commons believes Rodgers' game plan will now just be to get through to January, when he will have the chance to add to his stretched resources.

"I think Brendan Rodgers will be looking to patch up his squad, get to the January transfer window and get some reinforcements in."

Celtic have now slipped to third place in the Scottish Premiership table after losing at Easter Road, but do have one game in hand on leaders Rangers and two in hand on second placed Kilmarnock.
