Leeds United striker Patrick Bamford has claimed that the Whites returning to the summit of the Championship table sends a clear message, but insists they cannot afford to get carried away.

Bamford made his first appearance for the first team since August when he came off the bench just after the hour mark against Bolton Wanderers at the Macron Stadium on Saturday.

The 25-year-old, who netted a hat-trick for the Under-23s against Burnley on Tuesday, continued his good run of form when he scored the only goal of the game, just five minutes after coming on.

Marcelo Bielsa’s decision to introduce the striker, who has just returned from an injury, proved to be a masterstroke as Leeds climbed to the top of the league table after battling hard in poor conditions at Bolton.

Bamford, who joined Leeds in the summer, claimed that the Whites have sent out a clear message by taking top spot in the Championship, but insisted they cannot afford to get carried away.

“I think it [Leeds United climbing back to the top of the table] shows that we mean business and that we are here to try and participate in the league and do well”, Bamford told LUTV.

“But, it’s early days, it’s half way through and in the Championship, you win a few games and everything turns around in these few games.

“So it can turn around and that is why we have got to keep our mind on it, we can’t get carried away.

“I think the coaching staff and everyone around the club will make sure that our minds are on the task.”

Leeds’ victory coupled with Norwich City’s 2-2 draw at Bristol City meant that the Whites have a slender one-point lead over the Canaries at the summit of the league table.
