Rangers centre-back Gareth McAuley has revealed that he did not just sign for the club because of their rich history and wants to make his mark at Ibrox this season.

McAuley was signed on a free transfer after he was released by his previous club West Brom in the summer, and after struggling with a calf injury in the first month or so, the 39-year old has made his way into the first team.

The former West Brom defender started three successive games for Steven Gerrard’s side before being rested in the 1-1 draw against Dundee last weekend, and he insists he wants to play regularly and achieve something special this season with the Gers.

“It’s alright being here, but you want to grasp it with both hands, playing the games, do well", McAuley said on Rangers TV.

“Do well for the club and collectively, hopefully we can achieve something special in my time here”, he added.

McAuley played 227 times for West Brom before he was released by the Baggies, and the majority of those games were in the Premier League.

Rangers have a busy fixture list in December and McAuley, who played in Sunday's 1-0 win over Hamilton, will want to play his part.
