Leicester City manager Claude Puel has admitted he hopes former Foxes hero Riyad Mahrez is on the bench when his side take on Manchester City in an EFL Cup quarter-final tie on Tuesday.

Mahrez had a successful spell at the King Power Stadium and lifted the Premier League title in 2016 after nearly being relegated with the side the year before.

The Algerian international moved to Manchester City for a club record transfer fee in the summer and after a slow start, he is starting to show his true colours for the Sky Blues.

Puel revealed that the fans will be happy to see Mahrez make a return to the stadium where he achieved so much and hopes the former Foxes star will not start come Tuesday.

"He played and scored a lot for Leicester City”, Puel told a press conference ahead of the quarter-final.

"It will be good to see Riyad again, he gave his best for the club.

"I hope he is on the bench, though!

"We need to respect this team as it is a great team, but also bring our own qualities and play with desire", Puel added.

Mahrez has featured twice so far for Manchester City in the EFL Cup, but it remains to be seen if he lines up against his former club this week.
