Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has expressed his delight at coming back to Manchester United after the club confirmed him as their caretaker manager for the rest of the season.

The former Manchester United forward has been appointed on an interim basis, with Mike Phelan as his assistant, for the rest of the season as the club seek more time to find a long-term replacement for Jose Mourinho.

Manchester United are currently sixth in the league table, but are still in the Champions League and Solskjaer is looking forward to working with the talented squad at his disposal.

The former striker admits that it feels brilliant to return to Old Trafford in a new role.

He told the club’s official website: “Manchester United is in my heart and it’s brilliant to be coming back in this role.

“I’m really looking forward to working with the very talented squad we have, the staff and everyone at the club."

Manchester United executive vice-chairman Ed Woodward insists that Solskjaer’s stature at the club and his understanding of the culture are key things that led to his appointment.

He is hopeful that the forward will reunite the club and take them forward for the rest of the season.

“Ole is a club legend with huge experience, both on the pitch and in coaching roles.

“His history at Manchester United means he lives and breathes the culture here and everyone at the club is delighted to have him and Mike Phelan back.

“We are confident they will unite the players and the fans as we head into the second half of the season.”
