Rangers defender Gareth McAuley has revealed that Manchester United striker Romelu Lukaku is the best player he has played with, with the pair together at West Brom.

The Manchester United striker has been struggling for form this season and has been away on a compassionate leave, which saw him miss the last two league games.

Lukaku will be hopeful about getting back into his groove under new manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer and again prove his ability as one of the top goalscorers in the Premier League.

And he has received high praise from Rangers centre-back McAuley.

The defender told Rangers TV, when asked about the best player he has played with: “Romelu Lukaku when he was at West Brom.

“His goalscoring record for Belgium is phenomenal.”

McAuley himself is keen to leave a mark at Rangers, despite being in the twilight of his career.

The centre-back wants to emulate Rangers legend David Weir, who joined the club in his mid-30s, but managed to leave a huge impression on the Gers.

Asked to compare his game with a player, McAuley said: “Davie Weir.

“He came here for a short time and stayed a long time.

“So it would be nice to emulate that.”
