Former Rangers midfielder Derek Ferguson believes that something went on between Steven Gerrard and Celtic boss Brendan Rodgers at Liverpool, meaning this weekend's clash between the Bhoys and the Gers does carry an extra edge.

Gerrard has faced Rodgers just once since his appointment as Rangers manager, with the Gers losing narrowly at Celtic Park.

Gerrard played under Rodgers at Liverpool and his time at Anfield ended on the Northern Irishman's watch.

Ferguson is sure that something went on between the pair which means the rivalry is even healthier than that usually enjoyed by a Celtic and a Rangers manager.

"There's something there [between Rodgers and Gerrard]", Ferguson said on Open Goal.

"Something went on behind the scenes, obviously what happened at Liverpool."

Ferguson also believes Saturday's Old Firm clash is a great opportunity for Gerrard to get one over his former boss.

"I just think it's a great opportunity for Gerrard to get one over on Rodgers because he has been so dominant in this fixture.

"So it's about him [Gerrard] getting his tactics absolutely spot on."

Rangers have stuck close to Celtic in the Scottish Premiership so far this season and if they win on Saturday they can head into the winter break level on points with their fierce rivals.
