Rangers defender Gareth McAuley has talked up the qualities of Gers transfer target Steven Davis.

Davis, who made 200 appearances for the Light Blues before his move to Southampton, has been heavily linked with a return to Ibrox as the Gers hope to strengthen their squad in the upcoming transfer window.

McAuley has played alongside Davis for Northern Ireland, and believes the 33-year old’s game has often been overlooked outside the clubs he has played for.

“He’s been the driving force in our international team for years and years and down south in the Premier League, really underestimated actually how good he is by people outside the club he plays for.

“He’ll take the ball anywhere, drive you forward.

"He’s got an eye for a goal. A little dynamo”, McAuley said on Rangers TV.

Davis has not been able to break into the Southampton first team on a consistent basis this season and his future at the club, with a contract which expires in the summer, is unclear.

The Saints have preferred the duo of Oriol Romeu and Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg to Davis more often than not this season and the Northern Irishman's fortunes have not changed for the better under Ralph Hasenhuttl.

Rangers are expected to do business in the January transfer window, but it remains to be seen if Davis arrives.
