Sunderland boss Jack Ross is hoping he can tempt Celtic manager Brendan Rodgers into loaning Jack Hendry to the Black Cats for the second half of the season.

Ross is looking to add to his squad in this month's transfer window and inject fresh life into Sunderland's promotion bid, which has slowed, with a defeat and a draw to go with two wins in the side's last four games.

Sunderland want Hendry and, according to the Northern Echo, Ross is hoping to convince Rodgers that a loan is the right move for the 23-year-old.

Celtic paid £1.5m to sign Hendry from Dundee last year and he has already clocked up 25 first team appearances under Rodgers.

But Hendry last turned out for Celtic in October and Rodgers is looking for him to gain first team experience elsewhere.

Ross will have to persuade Rodgers that the Stadium of Light is the right environment for Hendry to kick on with his development.

The Sunderland manager has already started his bid to do so and spoke to Rodgers this week.

Sunderland are next in league action this weekend when they face Charlton Athletic.
