Arsenal manager Unai Emery has requested the club try and sign Torino centre-back Nicolas Nkoulou during the winter transfer window.

The 5-1 thrashing that Liverpool handed out to Arsenal recently has led to some soul-searching amongst the club, who are keen to consider strengthening their squad in January.

Emery wants to bring in more reinforcements for his defence, who have looked shaky all season and has identified a player he wants to sign this month.

The Arsenal manager has cast his eyes on Torino’s Nkoulou, and according to Italian outlet Calciomercato.it, he has suggested the defender to the club’s recruitment department.

The former Lyon and Marseille defender has seen his value grow since he joined Torino in 2017 and has managed to attract some interest across Europe.

Emery wants to add some experience to his backline and believes the 28-year-old could be a good solution for his defensive problems.

But Torino do not want to sell one of their top defenders in the middle of the season and will likely reject any initial bids.

Arsenal are also cash-strapped at the moment and there are suggestions that club only have the budget to sign players on loan in January.
