Noel Whelan believes Leeds United desperately need signings in this month's transfer window and should look to add experience to the squad.

Marcelo Bielsa's decision to go with a small squad has been pushed to the limit in recent weeks as injuries have taken their toll at Elland Road, meaning academy players have been drafted in to fill the gaps.

While Leeds went on a seven-game winning run which propelled them to the top of the Championship standings, they have now suffered back to back losses and calls are growing for the Whites to enter the transfer market.

For Whelan, Leeds need players desperately and could do with signing experienced heads.

Following the loss at Nottingham Forest, he said on BBC Radio Leeds: "We need players in.

"We need players in with stature, with quality and with probably some experience, to see us through this second half of the season."

Whelan also highlighted the reliance Leeds currently have on Pontus Jansson when it comes to dealing with balls into the box.

"We're relying too much on Pontus Jansson.

"He is the only one with any kind of aerial, physical dominance", he added.

Leeds have been linked with wanting to bring in a goalkeeper this month, but what they may do in other positions is uncertain.
