AC Milan director of football Leonardo has been working in the background to make a move for Chelsea and Liverpool target Nicolo Barella.

The 21-year-old Italian midfielder’s future at Cagliari has been under the scanner for several months as some of the biggest clubs in Europe are interested in signing him.

Inter have been accelerating their efforts to sign Barella and Napoli have reportedly readied a cash plus players bid for the midfielder in order to take him to the San Paolo.

And it seems one more top Italian club are now prepared to move for Barella as it has been claimed AC Milan are positioning themselves as one of his suitors.

According to Sky Italia, the Rossoneri director of football Leonardo is directly involved in the deal and is putting in place building blocks for an eventual offer.

AC Milan have already been in touch with Cagliari, who are believed to be holding out for a fee in excess of €50m for Barella.
