West Ham United have turned down an approach from Serie A side Bologna for defender Angelo Ogbonna.

Ogbonna has been linked with a move back to Italy, having failed to nail down regular a spot in the Hammers line-up this season.

Bologna want to sign a centre-back and are assessing their options in this month's transfer window.

They have approached West Ham about Ogbonna, but have been rebuffed, according to Italian daily Gazzetta dello Sport.

Manuel Pellegrini has preferred the duo of Issa Diop and Fabian Balbuena this season, and Ogbonna has subsequently started in just six Premier League games so far.

Ogbonna has a contract with the Hammers until 2022 and it seems unlikely that West Ham will let him leave unless they have a replacement lined up.

Since joining the east London outfit in the summer of 2015 from Juventus, the Italian international has gone on to make 111 appearances for the club.

Ogbonna has started in all of West Ham United’s cup games so far this season and played in the 2-0 FA Cup win against Birmingham City on Saturday.
