Roma Sporting Director Insists Chelsea Target Daniele Rugani Is Too Expensive

Roma sporting director Monchi has rubbished speculation of the Giallorossi being interested in Chelsea linked defender Daniele Rugani.

Rugani was on Chelsea’s radar last summer and despite heavy speculation of him moving to England, Juventus refused to sell the centre-back to the Premier League giants.

He remains highly rated by Maurizio Sarri, who coached him at Empoli, and the defender has continued to remain a bit part player at Juventus, making just six appearances in all competitions this season.

The 24-year-old is said to be feeling frustrated at the lack of opportunities and there are suggestions Roma are considering taking advantage of his frustration and looking to sign him in the near future.

But Monchi stressed that it is almost an impossible scenario as Roma would not be able to afford the kind of money Juventus would ask for if they approach them for Rugani.

He told Italian daily Gazzetta dello Sport when asked about the possibility of Roma signing the centre-back: “Impossible, now or later.

“They turned down a €40m offer from Chelsea.

“We cannot spend that much on a central defender.”

Chelsea are still believed to be keeping tabs on his situation and could return with a fresh offer.
