Chelsea have continued to hold positive talks with Zenit Saint Petersburg with regards to the possibility of signing midfielder Leandro Paredes.

Cesc Fabregas’ move to Monaco this month is on hold as Chelsea want to sign a midfielder before sanctioning the Spaniard’s transfer to the Ligue 1 giants.

Nicolo Barella and Paredes have emerged as the top targets for Chelsea this month, but the club are yet to take a definitive decision on whom to pursue.

The Italian is believed to be Maurizio Sarri’s choice, but Paredes has continued to remain on the radar of the Chelsea recruitment team as a possible midfield solution.

And according to Italian broadcaster Sportitalia, the Blues have continued to conduct positive conversations with their counterparts at Zenit over a possible deal for the Argentine.

They are far from reaching an agreement, but the two clubs share an excellent relationship and Chelsea believe a deal could be done if they want to eventually sign Paredes.

The defensive midfielder is said to be prepared to switch base to England, but Chelsea are reflecting on their choices for the January winter window.

They have already spent €64m to secure a deal to sign Christian Pulisic from Borussia Dortmund this month, though he will not arrive until the summer.
