Mauricio Pochettino has expressed his opinion on Christian Eriksen’s contract situation at Tottenham Hotspur, saying the Dane deserves freedom and trust to make his decision.

Eriksen, who has 18 months remaining in his current contract with Spurs, has warranted attention from Real Madrid in their search for a long-term successor to Luka Modric; Barcelona have also been linked with being admirers.

The Dane has been a consistent performer for Tottenham since his arrival in 2013 and has maintained his standards so far this season, with six goals and nine assists across all competitions.

However, Spurs will be concerned by the fact that he will soon enter the final year of his contract at the club, with potential suitors sniffing around for an opportunity to snare him away.

Despite the persistent rumours and uncertainty surrounding Eriksen’s future, Pochettino has claimed the midfielder deserves freedom and trust to make his decision regarding an extension at the club.

Pochettino compared Eriksen to his dog, with the reference implying that the Dane is special, and that he can never be restrained from being free to make his decisions.

"Maybe sign next week or in six months, or the club and him having different challenges and dreams", Pochettino told a press conference when asked about Eriksen's contractual situation.

“He's a very special person.

"You need to give freedom, like on the pitch, can't put him in the box.

“Like my dog, when you go in the park, you have to give freedom and trust."

Pochettino will be hoping Eriksen commits his future to the club, in what would be a boost for Spurs.
