Former Rangers star Lee McCulloch has explained that the Gers’ upcoming cup game against Cowdenbeath is unlikely to be straightforward, and says Steven Gerrard’s side might have to alter their tactics for the clash.

Rangers will face Cowdenbeath in their first game after the winter break in the fourth round of the Scottish Cup on Friday.

The Scottish League Two side are fifth in the league, but are expected might make things difficult for Rangers.

McCulloch, who turned out in his fair share of cup ties, feels that the game will be about rolling up their sleeves and getting the job done by playing direct football on what will be difficult pitch to adjust to.

“It isn’t the best place to go and play a game but Rangers can’t be thinking about any of that come kick-off. It is about starting well and having the right mentality”, McCulloch wrote in his column for the Evening Times.

“They might need to change their style a bit and go a bit more direct because of the state of the pitch, but they certainly have the quality to get through relatively easily if their heads are in the right place.

“Central Park is a grounder, that is for sure. It is a night for rolling your sleeves up and going there and doing what needs done.

“It is the first game since the Old Firm win and Rangers need the same attitude for this one.

“You can’t take anyone lightly or you can come unstuck when you don’t expect it and Rangers won’t just turn up and expect to breeze through without working for it.”

With Rangers no longer in the Europa League, they will hope to go all the way in the Scottish Cup and challenge Celtic in the Scottish Premiership at the same time.
