Josh Maja is working towards making a switch to the Bundesliga after running down his contract with Sunderland at the end of the season, it has been claimed.

The 20-year-old has opted against signing an extension at the Stadium of Light after renewal talks with Sunderland hit an impasse earlier this season.

And, according to the Northern Echo, Maja is now working towards making a switch to the German top flight amidst the interest from a number of Championship clubs in England.

However, the Englishman is keen on following in the footsteps of Jadon Sancho and Reiss Nelson, who have benefitted after their switch to Borussia Dortmund and Hoffenheim, respectively.

The Black Cats, who are now destined to lose Maja at the end of the season, will bag compensation when he shifts allegiances in the summer, although the player turned out for Fulham and Crystal Palace during his development.

Maja is being represented by Elite Project Group, who worked on the deals for Sancho and Nelson, and the agents are believed to be in contact with as many as three teams from Germany.

Despite his desire to move overseas, Maja could still be convinced to remain in England if either Cardiff City or Crystal Palace step up their interest in the player, but his limited experience outside League One could concern the teams.

Maja, who missed Sunderland’s draw with Luton Town last Saturday due to a stomach bug, could feature against Scunthorpe United this weekend.
