Rangers defender Gareth McAuley has issued a warning to his team-mates ahead of the Scottish Cup tie against Cowdenbeath by claiming it is a giant killing waiting to happen in Fife.

The Gers return to action for the first time since their impressive Old Firm derby win over Celtic when they hit the road to face Cowdenbeath at the Central Park Stadium on Friday night.

Steven Gerrard’s men will be aiming to start their cup campaign with a win over the League Two minnows in a bid to push for silverware at the end of the season.

Despite heading into the game as firm favourites, McAuley has warned his team-mates about the possibility of a giant killing waiting to happen in the cup tie.

McAuley insisted the Gers must be mentally well prepared for the game and urged his team-mates to turn up on the day and do what they do best to ensure progression.

“Mentally we have to be prepared for the match tomorrow and it is a giant killing waiting to happen”, McAuley said in a press conference ahead of the meeting with Cowdenbeath.

“We have to prepare properly and turn up and do what we do.”

Rangers could hand opportunities to winter-recruits Steven Davis and Jermain Defoe at some stage during the clash against Cowdenbeath.
