Didier Deschamps' assistant, Guy Stephan, has insisted that Chelsea striker Olivier Giroud needs to be playing regular first team football.

Giroud has struggled for consistent playing time under Blues boss Maurizio Sarri in recent months, with the Italian often opting for Eden Hazard in a false number 9 role.

Chelsea are also expected to soon land Gonzalo Higuain on loan from Juventus, a move which could push Giroud further down the pecking order at Stamford Bridge.

And Stephan was warned that the France international needs to be playing regularly.

"He is still France's fourth best all-time top scorer", Stephan explained on French TV programme Telefoot.

"He needs to play."

Giroud has clocked just 25 minutes of football over Chelsea's last three Premier League games and started on the bench in the Blues' 2-0 defeat at Arsenal on Saturday.

The hitman has made over 200 appearances in the Premier League since heading to England from Montpellier in 2012, netting 77 times in the English top flight.
