Former Leeds United attacker Noel Whelan feels that Izzy Brown may well not be able to step up to replace Samu Saiz.

Leeds signed Brown on loan from Chelsea in the summer, but the midfielder was still recovering from a serious knee injury when he made the switch to Elland Road and has yet to feature for the first team, recently suffering a setback.

The Yorkshire giants have been hopeful Brown can replace Saiz, who has joined Getafe on loan, but Whelan is doubtful over whether that is a realistic prospect.

Following the Whites' loss at Stoke, Whelan said on BBC Radio Leeds: "Izzy Brown [is the replacement] but he's not fit yet, apparently.

"We'll just have to wait for that and is he going to be the answer to that one? I am not so sure because he's played hardly any football in a year.

"Under-23 games to get up to speed are still not the same as Championship level", Whelan added.

Leeds have entered the transfer market this month by bringing in goalkeeper Kiko Casilla from Real Madrid, while they are also trying to snap up a winger.

But it is unclear whether Leeds will look to add another midfielder, or continue to hope that Brown can recover and make an impact.
