Connor Goldson has revealed that Rangers opting to play a diamond in midfield yielded unbelievable results in training and was blowing away those lining up against it at Murray Park.

Goldson, who missed the first four games since the turn of the year due to injury, returned to action against Aberdeen in the Scottish Premiership earlier this month.

The Englishman’s spell on the sidelines coincided with Steven Gerrard adopting a slight tweak in the formation in a bid to try and bring the best out of new arrival Jermain Defoe.

Rangers deployed a diamond in midfield during two of the four games Goldson missed due to injury and the defender has backed Gerrard’s decision by claiming the tweak had yielded unbelievable results in training.

Goldson revealed he was blown away with the results after watching the training sessions from the gym while working on recovering from his injury.

“Yes, I know [the manager tried a different formation when I was out injured]”, Goldson told Rangers TV.

“I watched a lot of training from the gym here in Murray Park.

"I looked at them doing the diamond when Jermain came.

“To be fair, some of the training sessions looked unbelievable.

"The diamond was blowing away the opposition in training and creating so many chances.”

And despite being held to a 0-0 draw at Rugby Park in the Scottish Cup earlier this month when using the diamond, Goldson insisted the Gers were able to replicate similar results with the diamond, albeit in an early spell.

“Obviously, it’s different when you go to Kilmarnock, but even then I think for the first 25 minutes to 30 minutes of that game, the diamond worked perfectly”, he continued.

“We controlled the ball, controlled the whole game, created chances and it wasn’t until obviously they equalised that I think they got a bit of confidence and pushed on.”

Rangers ran out 5-0 winners in their Scottish Cup fifth round replay against Kilmarnock on Wednesday and will next face Aberdeen in the quarter-finals next month.
