Rangers shot-stopper Allan McGregor has insisted the Gers must conjure a strong finish to the season in order to restore the winning mentality at the club.

Steven Gerrard’s men are now 11 points adrift of league leaders Celtic with just five games remaining in the Scottish Premiership season.

The Gers’ defeat in the Old Firm derby at Parkhead at the end of last month meant they are now well and truly off the pace to try and prevent Celtic from winning their eighth league title in a row.

On the other hand, Celtic are inching closer to completing a treble treble as they prepare to face Aberdeen in the Scottish Cup semi-final at Hampden Park on Sunday.

Despite their shortcomings so far this season, McGregor has stressed the importance of Rangers finishing the season strongly by insisting they must restore the winning mentality at the club.

The Gers veteran admitted winning the bulk of the remaining games is essential for next season as well as to give the fans and the players a boost to look ahead to the future.

“It’s always important [to finish the season very strongly]”, McGregor told Rangers TV.

“I say it all the time, it’s the next game that you need to win.

“It’s just simple as that.

"Whether it’s for next season or whether it’s just to give yourselves a confidence boost, whether it’s to give the fans a boost, it’s just [about] restoring that winning mentality every single game.”

Rangers, who beat Motherwell 3-0 on Sunday, will next face Hearts at Tynecastle.
