Former Ajax star Hedwiges Maduro believes Donny van de Beek is good enough to play for clubs such as Arsenal and Tottenham Hotspur at the moment.

Van de Beek has been part of the impressive Ajax team that defeated Real Madrid in the Champions League last 16 and made a shock entry into the quarter-finals.

While players such as Matthijs de Ligt, Frenkie de Jong and Dusan Tadic have attracted the headlines and transfer rumours, the 21-year-old has continued to remain a key part of the team.

He has also been linked with a move away, but Maduro believes the youngster is not yet ready to play for clubs such as Barcelona or Manchester City, and he wants Van de Beek to make his next decision carefully.

The former Ajax star feels Van de Beek is good enough for the next rung of clubs on the ladder, such as Arsenal and Tottenham in England.

Maduro told Dutch broadcaster NOS: “Van de Beek is of the same level as [former Everton midfielder Davy] Klaassen.

“He is also a good player, but his next choice will be important.

“At Manchester City or Barcelona, he could be playing the same style of football as Ajax, but I think it would a level too high for him.

“The category of clubs below that should be a possibility.

“Arsenal, Tottenham Hotspur, Valencia or Sevilla – those kinds of clubs.

“Arsenal would suit him in style.”

Ajax may well dig in to resist selling Van de Beek as they could already be losing Matthijs de Ligt and David Neres, after agreeing to sell Frenkie de Jong to Barcelona in the summer.

Maduro left Ajax for La Liga in 2008, where he played for Valencia and Sevilla.
