Eddie Gray has insisted that Leeds United need to be as close to their best possible in their remaining five games in order to clinch an automatic promotion spot.

Leeds sealed a playoff spot as a minimum by beating Preston Norh End in midweek, but with Sheffield United dropping points against Birmingham City in midweek, the Whites have moved up to second in the league table.

With five games left to play, Leeds are desperate to make sure they earn promotion back to the Premier League by finishing in the top two rather than going through the lottery of the playoffs.

Leeds will host Sheffield Wednesday at Elland Road today and Whites legend Gray is happy that their fate in the promotion race is back in their hands after the midweek results.

But the Leeds legend feels Marcelo Bielsa’s side will have to be at the top of their game for the final five fixtures in order to clinch promotion as they may need to win maximum points.

The former White said on LUTV: “For ourselves, it is in our hands again.

“We have got another tough one, another local derby and a huge crowd as you know.

“We have got to be on song in every game we play, be nearly at our best and pick up three points in every game.”

Apart from Sheffield Wednesday’s trip to Elland Road today, Leeds will also host Wigan Athletic and Aston Villa before the end of the season.

They have away trips to Brentford and will play at Ipswich Town on the last day of the season.
