Former Leeds United boss Neil Redfearn has admitted he fancies the Whites to win against Aston Villa, but insists the games against Wigan Athletic and Brentford will be tough.

Marcelo Bielsa’s men took a hugely significant step towards securing automatic promotion to the Premier League with a 1-0 win over Sheffield Wednesday on Saturday in the Championship.

The Whites’ victory, coupled with their rivals Sheffield United dropping points at home to Millwall, now means they have a three-point lead over the Blades with just four games remaining in the season.

Leeds will next face Wigan Athletic at home and lock horns with both Brentford and Aston Villa, before finishing their campaign at Portman Road against Ipswich Town.

And ahead of their final push for promotion, Redfearn has warned the Whites about facing the likes of Wigan and Brentford at this stage of the season.

The former Whites’ boss admitted that he fancies Leeds to win against Aston Villa, but stressed that Wigan and Brentford could cause them some problems in the next two games before that.

“The difficult games, as daft as it seems, will be playing people like Wigan at home because they are desperate”, Redfearn said on BBC Radio Leeds after the win over Wednesday.

“They need the points to stay in the league.

“So the need for them is as great as it is for Leeds to get promoted.

“They [the remaining fixtures] are not easy games.

“[But] if I am honest I fancy them against Villa. I think they will have too much for Wigan.

“Brentford is a tough one purely for the fact, I've had sides at Brentford, and the surrounds, it's a little tight pitch, difficult to play there and they are a difficult team to play against, quite free-flowing, they create chances and take chances.

“But it is the Championship and you are not going to get an easy ride from anyone.”

Leeds have amassed 82 points from 42 games in the Championship so far this season.
