Former Leeds United attacker Noel Whelan believes Pablo Hernandez was off song against Wigan Athletic and no one stepped up to the plate to take over.

Hernandez has been a key man for the Yorkshire giants in their push for automatic promotion from the Championship this season.

But he missed a penalty in Leeds' 2-1 defeat at home against Wigan and turned in a lacklustre display as the Whites slipped down to third in the Championship standings.

Whelan makes no bones about the fact Hernandez was off-colour against Wigan, but feels that someone else in the Leeds' side should have stepped up.

"I don't think he was at it today", Whelan admitted on BBC Radio Leeds after the defeat.

"I've always said that when Pablo's at it, we're at it.

"And he just wasn't the same player today.

"That Pablo Hernandez who dictates the game and finds those passes, takes on teams and can single-handedly win a game with a pass and a goal, and that special quality he possesses, today it didn't happen for him.

"But when it doesn't happen for that one player, someone else has got to step up, and no one really did."

Leeds will be looking for Hernandez to quickly find his form again as they are next in action away at Brentford on Easter Monday.

The Whites have a poor record at Griffin Park and went down to a 3-1 defeat on their last visit to the Bees.
