Steven Gerrard has insisted Rangers must strengthen their squad in the summer as he does not have a magic wand to solve things overnight.

The Old Firm giants crashed out of the Scottish Cup last month and are now 11 points adrift of table-toppers Celtic, with just five games remaining this season.

Rangers have all but given up their hopes of usurping Celtic from the summit of the Scottish Premiership as they prepare to face Hearts away from home at Tynecastle on Saturday.

And with the season approaching its climax, Gerrard has insisted Rangers must strengthen their squad in the summer to make themselves a force again.

The Gers manager also admitted they want to finish the season strongly to prepare for next season, but maintained he has no magic wand that can strengthen the team overnight.

“We want to finish this season as strongly as we can and then we will get ourselves best prepared for next season”, Gerrard told a press conference.

“I'm not a guy with a magic wand, everyone knows we will need backing.

“There has been progress made in a lot of areas which I am happy with and I have also made it clear where we need to improve in the eleven moving forward.”

Rangers, who brought in as many as 15 new players after the appointment of Gerrard last summer, are expected to face another busy transfer window at the end of the season.
