Noel Whelan has bemoaned Leeds United needing to score the perfect goal after the Whites went down to a shock 2-1 defeat at home against struggling Wigan Athletic.

Leeds, who missed an early penalty, did lead Wigan 1-0 after 17 minutes, with the visitors also having been reduced to ten men.

But Paul Cook's Latics levelled before half time before then scoring again just after the hour mark to grab an unlikely victory at Elland Road.

Leeds dominated possession, put crosses into the box and enjoyed numerous shots at goal, but could not hit the back of the net more than once.

And Whelan thinks an issue for Leeds is that they always need to score the perfect goal, meaning they lack a direct streak when needed.

The former Leeds forward also noted the lack of height in the Whites team.

"We've seen beforehand when it's attack v defence they've got to score that perfect goal", Whelan said on BBC Radio Leeds after the game.

"Too much playing around the 18-yard box, not enough bodies in the box, they've [Wigan] got quite a big side; we’re not, we’re not a big side, even [Gaetano] Berardi coming in is only six foot.

"So when it comes to set pieces we're not really offering too much.

"But we have to score a very good goal to get goals.

"Not very often have we scored scruffy, horrible goals", Whelan added.

Leeds, who slipped to third place in the Championship table after the unexpected defeat, are next in action on Easter Monday at Brentford.
