James Milner says Manchester City know they cannot afford to drop a single point, after Liverpool beat Cardiff City 2-0 to return to the top of the Premier League table.

Manchester City got past Tottenham Hotspur on Saturday to push Liverpool off top spot, but now trail the Reds by two points, albeit having played a game fewer.

Liverpool's goals came from Milner, from the penalty spot, and Georginio Wijnaldum, and the pressure is now firmly on Manchester City ahead of the Manchester derby in midweek.

Milner admits all Liverpool can do is keep winning their games, but he stressed that Manchester City understand they cannot afford to drop points.

"We just need to concentrate on our side, all we can do is keep the pressure on by winning games", Milner said on Sky Sports after the final whistle.

"[Manchester City] know they have to be perfect as well.

"All we can do is win the rest of our games, hopefully it's good enough.

"Both teams have been pretty ruthless and clinical. It's not easy week on week, we've lost one game and are second [before this game]."

Manchester City can move back into top spot if they can beat Manchester United at Old Trafford on Wednesday evening.

Liverpool meanwhile are next in action at home against already relegated Huddersfield Town on Friday night, while they then have just two league games left, at Newcastle United and at home against Wolves.
