Liverpool legend Ray Houghton has pointed out the remarkable difference in the options Jurgen Klopp has this season on the bench compared to last year.

The Reds are going into Sunday’s final Premier League matchday still in with a chance to win the league, but they will have to beat Wolves at Anfield and hope Brighton somehow stop Manchester City from winning on the south coast.

Liverpool have also made it to their second successive Champions League final and Houghton believes regardless of what happens, it has been a wonderful season for the Merseyside giants.

The former Red believes the strength in depth in Liverpool’s squad has been the key behind their success this year and feels Klopp’s astute decisions in the transfer market last summer created the base for the campaign.

He pointed at the sparse options Klopp had on the bench last season in the Champions League final compared to what he has at the moment.

The Liverpool legend said on LFC TV: “I come back to the Champions League final last season.

“If you looked at the bench that day, other than Emre Can and Adam Lallana, who were coming back from injuries, and Dominic Solanke.

“That was the attacking options we had.

“Look at the bench now, the manager understood what was required and he strengthened in the right positions.

“And the season has been absolutely phenomenal.”

Divock Origi, a player who was close to leaving, scored two goals in Liverpool’s 4-0 win over Barcelona earlier this week.
