Former Norway defender John Arne Riise has insisted that as one of the biggest clubs in the world Manchester United should have appointed a more experienced manager than Ole Gunnar Solskjaer.

After a stuttering start under Jose Mourinho, the Red Devils finally parted ways with the Portuguese manager in late December, recruiting former Manchester United forward Solskjaer in his place.

At first, the unexpected decision changed things for the better, as Manchester United went a whopping 11 matches without defeat. They even pulled off an extraordinary comeback against Paris Saint-Germain in the last 16 of the Champions League.

But then the side's form faltered and the Red Devils were thrown out of the Champions League by Barcelona, suffered a humiliating 4-0 defeat at Everton, and, ultimately, ended the season picking up only two points from their last four Premier League matches.

Riise knows Solskjaer has been clear about using the time to prepare for next season, but believes there is only so long the excuse will last for. And he questioned whether Manchester United should have gone for a more experienced boss.

"The problem with Ole Gunnar Solskjaer is that he is using the excuse that he's preparing for the next season. But how long can you say that?" Riise said on beIN Sports.

"You have only won two in 12, the defending in the last few games, the attacking play is not just there. They are really, really struggling.

"If they spend millions next season, get high-salary players, it still doesn't work out, they sack Ole after a few months and start again then. So, they have to really think about what they are going to do.

"United are not just a football club, they are one of the biggest clubs in the world, and you're hiring a manager who's been in Cardiff for a little while and in Norway, which is unlike any other big club in the world."

Manchester United, who finished five points behind fourth-placed Tottenham Hotspur, take part in their first friendly, against Perth Glory, on the 13th July.
