Rangers may have one fewer club to battle for Oldham Athletic defender George Edmundson as Preston North End are not tipped to follow up on their interest.

Edmundson, who was named in the League Two Team of the Year, has been a star performer for Oldham in the fourth-tier this season.

As such, the 21-year-old has attracted interest from as many as seven clubs, including Preston and Rangers, ahead of the transfer window in the summer.

However, according to the Lancashire Post, Preston are now tipped to be unlikely to maintain their pursuit of Edmundson in a bid to bolster their ranks during the close season.

It is claimed that Alex Neil would prefer strengthening his squad with players who have experience of playing in the Championship, rather than launching a swoop for Edmundson.

And as a result, Rangers will likely have one fewer team to take on for Edmundson.

Despite their interest in Edmundson, it remains to be seen whether Rangers can match the financial capabilities of the other potential suitors in the form of Derby County, Hull City, Stoke City, Wigan Athletic and Millwall.

The Gers would likely have to fork out a tempting offer, if they want to snare Edmundson away from England during the summer transfer window.

Edmundson, who notched up 54 appearances in all competitions for Oldham this term, has a contract with the club that runs until 2020.
