Davie Hay has advised Celtic to bring back Patrick Roberts from Manchester City, noting the winger thoroughly impressed in his previous spell with the Scottish champions.

Neil Lennon's side are on their way to a domestic treble, but Celtic are expected to make substantial changes to their squad in the summer transfer window.

Roberts moved to Girona on loan from Manchester City at the start of the season, but has struggled to make his mark.

Before his stint in Spain, Roberts spent two seasons on loan at Celtic. During his first spell in the 2016/17 campaign, the English winger directly contributed to 30 goals across all competitions, emerging as one of the standout performers at Celtic Park.

Celtic legend Hay has urged the eight-time Scottish champions to sign Roberts from Manchester City, claiming he could have a considerable impact next season.

In his column for the Evening Times, he wrote: "One man that certainly could and probably should be a consideration for Celtic this summer is Patrick Roberts.

"The winger hasn’t really hit the heights we all know that he is capable of in Girona on loan from Manchester City this season, but he did exceptionally well at Celtic in his spell up in Scotland and he is still young at 22.

"Whether it would be a possibility or not I’m not sure, because he will be going into the final year of his contract with Manchester City, but he really enjoyed his time up here and I’m sure the player himself would be open to the possibility of a return.

"His second season wasn’t as successful as his first, but he got an injury and then the form of James Forrest meant that he couldn’t get back into the team regularly.

"I think that the two of them could play in the same team and maybe switch flanks.

"With Scott Sinclair’s future looking uncertain, he is one who would be almost certain to have an impact."

Roberts has featured in 20 games for Girona across all competitions this season, registering only one assist.
