Celtic legend Chris Sutton has revealed that his understanding is there was an offer made regarding Jose Mourinho becoming the Bhoys' new manager.

The Scottish giants currently have Neil Lennon at the helm in an interim capacity following the departure of Brendan Rodgers to Leicester City.

Lennon has received big backing in some quarters to get the job permanently, but Celtic have kept mum on their plans and have been linked with other managers.

Former Manchester United and Real Madrid boss Mourinho has seen his name connected with the Celtic job and, though Sutton cannot fathom the Portuguese taking over at Celtic Park, he has confirmed there was an offer put forward.

"It's so tough to stand here and say who will be the next Celtic manager because it is a big job, there's going to be a lot of managers in for it", he said on BT Sport Facebook at Rugby Park ahead of Rangers playing Kilmarnock.

"Mourinho was heavily linked and I am led to believe there was something in that in terms of there being an offer.

"[But] why would he take the Celtic job? I just don't get it.

"I don't know [the details] but there was an offer."

Mourinho has been out of work since being sacked by Manchester United earlier this season, but the Portuguese is plotting a return to the dugout.

Newcastle United's Rafael Benitez has also been floated as a potential Celtic manager.
