Former Leeds United attacker Noel Whelan is keen to see the Whites kick off their transfer business early this summer and is hopeful their campaign in the Championship will have sold the Yorkshire giants to potential signings.

Leeds came within a whisker of winning promotion to the Premier League this term, falling at the playoff semi-final hurdle, and fans are hopeful they can go again next term.

Despite being in the mix for automatic promotion, Leeds signed only goalkeeper Kiko Casilla in the January transfer window, surprising some, who had thought a striker would be on the transfer menu.

Whelan feels Leeds do need to go out and get a striker and said on BBC Radio Leeds following the playoff exit: "We need a prolific goalscorer. We need someone who knows where the back of the net is. We need someone who's going to convert those assists and chances into goals.

"We've just not done it enough this season and it's not just strikers that he been guilty. Midfielders and wide players have been guilty of it as well", he added.

And the former White is keen for Leeds to start their transfer business as soon as possible, with the window now open.

Whelan also feels that Leeds' thrilling season and fan backing will have done much to sell the club as a potential destination to players who can come in and improve the side.

"The transfer window is open. So people can be signed.

"There's lots of free agents out there that will probably have seen how good our fans are, how good this club is, and hopefully we can attract some players who are going to make us bigger, better and stronger for next season's campaign", Whelan said.

Leeds are currently licking their wounds after their playoff defeat at the hands of Derby, but all eyes are on whether Marcelo Bielsa agrees to stay as head coach.
