Manchester United are set to slap in an opening bid for Newcastle United midfielder Sean Longstaff, according to the Press Association.

The 21-year-old broke into the Newcastle first team in the second half of the season and made 12 appearances before suffering an ankle injury, which ruled him out for the rest of the campaign.

The midfielder is rated highly at Newcastle and the club are expected to offer him a new contract when he comes back for pre-season this summer.

Newcastle have no interest in selling the player, but Longstaff’s performances have piqued the interest of Manchester United, who want to take him to Old Trafford.

And now it has been claimed Newcastle are expecting an opening bid from Manchester United to arrive before the weekend.

Longstaff has been identified by the club’s recruitment team as a talent with potential and Manchester United are ready to move early order to secure his signature.

But it remains to be seen whether Newcastle agree to let the player go if Manchester United offer the right kind of money.

Rafael Benitez is a fan of the Englishman and is not keen on losing him this summer.

Longstaff has also been scouted by Manchester City and Liverpool.
