A representative of Bordeaux coach Paulo Sousa has confirmed Arsenal’s interest in his client and revealed that they have already been in touch with him.

Sousa took charge of Bordeaux in March this year and his performance in Ligue 1 has attracted the attention of several interested parties.

The 49-year-old Portuguese has reportedly been on Arsenal’s radar and he is part of a shortlist of candidates the club have drawn up to replace Unai Emery, who was sacked last month.

Sousa had a forgettable time in England during the start of his coaching career and had spells at Queen Park Rangers, Leicester City and Swansea City towards the end of the previous decade.

But close to a decade later he could be back in England as a representative of his entourage confirmed that Arsenal have been in touch.

He added that Arsenal not only like the kind of coach Sousa is, but also the personality that he would bring to the Emirates.

A representative of Sousa’s entourage told French sports daily L’Equipe: “They like his profile as a coach but also as a person, we were contacted.

“But that doesn’t mean he will leave.

“They have targeted several candidates but Paulo is one of them, certainly.”

Sousa has an exit clause in his contract with Bordeaux that is believed to be around the €2m mark.
