The only way city will push for automatic promotion is for the defence cut out stupid errors they made at cardiff , and to bring in at least 2 quality strikers .

Im expecting city to finish mid table , i hope im wrong and we do get promoted again .

In general I agree with the basic thrust of your comments that rich and powerful teams can really pull out all the stops in pursuit of a player they wish to acquire.\

I believe there is one mitigating factor in Barcelona's well-publicized campaign to re-acquire Fabregas. Barcelona, unlike a lot of teams (Inter Milan comes to mind), actually tries to stack their squad with players who come from Spain, or even more specifically, the Catalonia region. I think that is a laudable thing. Barcelona, being "more than a team", truly does try to develop a squad which can take pride in being a representation of its actual geographical location. Accordingly, its La Masia training school is filled with local talent whom Barcelona spends years working to groom into the quality talented teams we see on the pitch of Camp Nou. Fabregas was one such player. Thus, it makes sense to me, given Barcelona's desire to field Catelonian players, and given the investment they put into Fabregas' development while at La Masia, that Barcelona would really make a strong effort to secure Fabregas when they are looking to reinforce their squad at the forward mid-field position.

They can afford to take no interest in the twists and turns? nonsense. O'Neill hastily arranged "amicable" meeting with the player attests to just how serious O'Neill takes it - I'd love to know what went on in that meeting as Milner had never actually asked for a transfer, O'Neill is a crafty little bugger

Am not sure that the "tone" of the negotiations is poor.
Anyone is entitled to ask the question ? Is such and such available.
At least Harry Redknap has a refreshingly honest attitude to that.
I don't blame Villa at all for holding out for as much as they can get. There has to be a point though when they come to a decision. It is clear that whatever good position you are in - a phrase i don't equate with Villa in view of the fact that the owner has said you have to sell to buy. The decision being how much will City go to. I can't see them going to £30m as they have made a point about these prices. You must be happy with £24m + certainly reading other Villa pages the fans are - though not happy at him going i concede but the money is good and MON is one of those men who can find good value replacements.
I am a great fan of Dunne, but you still did what you did the season before and tailed off to the end of the season. I didn't see Dunne changing that for you.
I am from Manchester but live in Birmingham and do wish villa well, cept when your playing us of course !!
My ideal top 4 for this season
Man City, Aston Villa, and anyone but Man United, Liverpool and Everton. In whatever order as i am not convinced City will gel in a season.

Their lack of investment is absolutely staggering. I know that they think there's a chance that they can survive on IH's great team talks and one liners, but let's remember that they only just scraped into the play-offs. And since then they have lost a few of their top loanees without replacement. Fair enough they are being prudent, but overly so imo. They could be the next Derby...

Mmmm, Just as you feel the lack of signings is familiar, I feel your predicted downfall of Arsenal is too. Arsenal's main strength last year was the overall advance in maturity of their young squad. This trend will undoubtedly continue with most of them. This is the reason that although they do not spend big on numerous 'stars' they still improve.

I do feel we still need an experienced CB id Campbell leaves and a new GK. Outside of that I think we have enough to compete with Man Utd and Chelsea, who in my view have not improved o last season at all. Man City could be a threat of course, but I still think they are just a band of journey men who will crumble when the heat is really on. Spurs will find it difficult to balance CL and EPL. As a result I think they will lose that top 4 spot to either City or Pool.

People love to predict Arsenal will drop out of the top 4 every year....and yet every year we prove a point. We not only get top 4 but usually challenge. I can see us going that little bit closer this year.

Who know's though. There is a very fine line between having a great season and actually becoming champions. We will need our luck with injuries and some big decisions.

I agree with Burman that diving is the worst of soccer, closely followed by the excessive whining when a real foul is made. Both behaviors are the right things to do for players under the present system. Eye-in-the-sky, on-the-fly ref (assisting the umpire in the field by voting from tv screen for fouls etc) are the solution to this that wont introduce additional stops in the game (the most common and argument against video techno).

I like the idea of the no points for a 0-0 tie rule too.

Personally, I think the 2010 World Cup in South Africa was a huge success. I found nothing but the most warm, hospitable and generous people - both white and black. Everything I encountered was extremely well organised and catered for. I also felt safe everywhere I went. Thank you South Africa and FIFA for an experience I will never forget.

If Fifa were looking to make any changes I'd prefer they set up some kind of judiciary to review instances of simulation and impose heavy fines, suspensions, bans and even point deductions in extreme cases where there is evidence of diving. The fines can fund the judiciary so effectively the 'worst' clubs are the ones who pay for the initiative. Everybody agrees that simulation is cheating so there should be no reason not to take a very heavy handed approach. Surely the fans would support this?

I don't know if the game or the scoring needs a big makeover, but if you wanted to encourage more attacking football you could just eliminate any points for a 0-0 scoreline, i.e. if you don't score you'll always get nothing from the game. This would mean even if the game is scoreless after 60 minutes teams would adopt a more attacking style for the finish, they may even start the game with a more aggressive formation.

Your stupid prediction just goes to show that Paul the Octopus is a better predictor than Paul the Smith. Canada was racist against Germans when I came here in 1963 & as a 6-yr-old was called "Kraut" & "Nazi." IT'S GERMANY'S TURN TO WIN THE CUP! As a blonde, being underestimated as served me well my entire life. The underestimation of this German Mannschaft, is best summed up by Klose's comments pre-Argentina game: "We will see how they behave when they lose." Until Canada starts paying major bucks to train up our kids in Füßball - so we can actually qualify, I'll be rooting for Deutschland.
Astute and fair. Rafa is a sought after coach by big teams. Not because of his final season ast Anfield, more his CV over the past 10 years viz; 2 La Liga titles, UEFA Cup, Champions League (and another final), FA Cup and Super Cup. Roy's 10 year haul? 0.
I've nothing against Roy, but no other top club wants him, this alone shows how the Americans have turned LFC into a second tier club.

My money is on Argentina to come out of the group stages and win it all. Brazil has look ok but they have not faced any difficult competition. It will be interesting to see how the will react against Portugal.

Most of the factor for the World Champion 2010 are saying Spain will win the title. But usually it isn't the big favourite that will win the tournament, so I think Brasil will make the race.

Must be a ManUtd fan, the writer of this article. Why do people consider Drogba's offside goal (that made it 2-0) a crucial goal, since the one at the other end that made it 2-1, was a handball goal. Why should one be disallowed and the other allowed?

Even without Fabregas and Van Persie, if we'd had a keeper of any class other than Almuniarse and Flappianski, we could've capitalised on both Chavski and Man U's mistakes. Between them both they cost us 8 or 9 points and the chance to take the Cup. Having said that, the fact that Fabregas is off to Barca should be enough to make Wenger and the board realise its time to buy ready made quality, get rid of the 6 or 7 underperforming and over rated players, get back to basics, defend, keep possesion and bloody shoot into the back of the net, instead of poncing about making pretty patterns with no end result!!

Well, in my opinion this is a consequence to the lack of great players in Brazil.

We still have some of them, but they're not as common as a few decades ago when all the players were here.

The 90s were terrible for Brazilian football. Not only on the pitch, but also in the federations. Some teams that were supposed to be relegated didn't go to the second division and that just diminishes the Brazilian football.

Without the great players and the good credibility, the fans lost interest in the league.

And when you don't have good players, increasing prices keeps the fans away from the stadium.

By the way, Inter already have more than 100,000 registered members.

I don't get the pointn that Platini is trying to achieve. For a long time now, football has been a free market.

If the point is to create a level playing field by eradicating the ridiculous levels of debt, then I can agree with this.

It is one thing to "buy" a trophy, and quite another to borrow enough to buy a trophy, and then default on the borrowings.

Year after year, Abramovich writes off the Chelsea debt, using his own money, and though it puts the rest of us at a disadvantage, it's not for me to say how he should spend his money.

By the same token, I don't believe that Platini should interfere if this is the real issue he dislikes. Otherwise, we are effectively bringing a form of socialism into football. What do we next to equlise the playing field? Insist that teams field mputees?

I think the responses to this have missed the point. Liverpool had a disastrous season by their owwn standards, and it looks as if next season could be worse. Whether Spurs do it again next season is not the issue. The issue is whether Liverpool can can rebuild to overtake both Spurs and City, as well as fight off the challenges of Villa and Everton> If they lose Gerard or Torres, or maybe even both, what price Pool for te top eight, never mind the big four?

Get a grip Liam, Spurs have one good season in a blue moon, and with it that brings the end of the big 4? I remember Everton doing the same and beat liverpool to the 4th spot and we all remember what happend. No experiance, bottle or quality brought with a humilatinig exit out of europes elite competition.

If I was you, go put a bet on Spurs to be out of europe by the second week of the season, never mind quarter final!

Everton said they had broken the top 4 monopoly as well - until they couldn't sign "big" players who stalled until they navigated the qualifying round - but were knocked out before the group stage so they never came.

If Liverpool get the right owners then our return to the top 4 will be swift. Arsenal are the club who should be worried long-term as they are a similar size and fanbase to Spurs

Hmm as soon as I read “open their chequebooks” I realised that you didn’t know what you were talking about. I may be wrong but my understanding of the purchases is that the shysters borrowed more money and changed the club an inflated interest rate over what they were paying to repay these “loans”.

Further saying that “ they rightly saw the need to move” etc… what a pile of poo…. Research shyster No 1 Hicks and read about his “ Brazil Corinthians” debacle and you will see a strange parallel to the lies and false promises as to ourselves. As for a spade in the ground within 60 days; over 1,000 days later and all there is is a fence around the bit of the park that they’ve trashed, and millions of OUR money spent on reviews, revisions, new plans, etc etc just to spin us all along and hide the fact that have not got the will or the money to invest in the club, as they promised!

Hard facts: When they took over our debt was about £40 million, it now stands at somewhere in the region of £240 million, although there are concerns that it’s significantly more than this due to “accounting practices”.

The sooner these 2 slime balls crawl back under their stones that they came from with their spawn, the better!

I gotta say Barcelona's last match seemed less than impressive. I was really bothered by Messi taking shots when passes would have been the better choice. In particular, essentially on a two man breakaway Messi would have assisted an easy goal if he's passed, but instead he ignored his teammate to the left and took on the keeper unsuccessfully himself. That instance seemed so uncharacteristic and it felt like an emotional turning point where after there was a tension and uncomfortableness around Messi's role. He seemd like he was forcing himself to score rather than just flowing and that degree of self-consciousness affected the entire team negatively.

i dont uderstand why u dont mention messi, pato or other world class players? giving suggetions is always easy. But best solutions not always feasible solutions. We dont need RB. especially not romos lamh. before commenting pls check club stat too. i agree we need an AM. but wasting too much also not helpful.

What a dreadful article. "As predicted last summer Uniteds squad has its limitations" Yeah I can see where that prediction would come from just after we won the league and got to the champs league final again. Visionary. I dont know which Gary Neville you have been watching but he has been brilliant since he came back. And then to finish off its claimed Danielle De Rossi is an attacking playmaking midfielder when he is in fact a defensive anchor man. It amuses me the grief we get whilst still being successful when you think Wenger has gone 6 years without a single trophy but yet again the focus of all the end is nigh empire crumbling rubbish from the media is centered on United again. I wish I had a pound for every time we have been finished over the last ten years as I would be a multi millionarie. You lot never ever learn no matter how many times Fergie makes you look stupid.

It's a hot day. Man U will be disappointed. they will do their best, but this year is Chelsea's turn to shine again. So Man city will beat Man U 2-1. Adebayor & Tevev will shine their boot again. Rooney will be injured again so don't feature him at all. It will be a great football match.

Must be tough for a lot of these guys. Having to admit that you are not going to "make it" whilst still playing professionally I think would be difficult. Sounds like Iain has a future after his playing days: good article

Great article Iain. I actually use Ruel Fox as a personal trainer in the gym. He has been helping me work on the upper pectoral and bicep areas. Mainly doing 15 reps with lighter weights. It just shows you there is a life after football.

Well presented article. Amazing to hear how "star EPL" players such as Ruel Fox now have "normal" jobs after their careers have finished. I believe a lot of progress has been made in the last decade to educate footballers in how to survive life after as Iain put it "the last ball has been kicked" which was ill-afforded to their predessors. This can only bode well for the future.

Many international youth academies focus just as much on education as footballing talent, the UK seem to have fallen behind in this ethos but the recent initiatives put in place will hopefully change that for the stars (and the "almost made its") of the future.

Many youngsters (myself included) dreamt of fame and fortune in the footballing world but a lot can be said for plying your trade as a QS behind a desk......ahem

Worst ever signings do not get transfers to Barcelona, score goals that get you into finals and make profits when you sell them on. Alberto Mendez, Stefan Malz, Kaba Diawara, Tavlaridis and Caballero were all much worst than (most of) this lot. Why aren't they on the list? Because you've never heard of them. Why have you never heard of them? Because they were/are actually crap!

I'm a ulta-United fan and what you stated about them has been the truth for some time now. Everybody kept on talking about strength and depth of the squad. But without Rooney the rest of the team is average at best. But for the life of me, I cannae understand why SAF doesn't buy a creative midfielder, some strikers, etc. And gets Tosic te hell back. But sorry, I shouldn't be ranting @ you. Well done on the article. I do agree. It's just frustrating to see that no team truly fear coming to OT anymore. But with guys like Carrick practically playing for the other team (mostly too slow & unifluential) who would?

The Fla-Flu lacks the exposure it deserves in UK at least and it's significance isnt really recognised here.

Fla-Flu shares the amount of tradition and passion that any UK derby does and truely is one of the 'great' world derbies. Great text.

To say West Ham have "no case" is simply incorrect! I do not agree with it, but there is a rule in place regarding fielding weak sides, which Wolves were fined for earlier in the season. Fulham rested 6 first team players, and I'd like to suggest that if 1 player can "single handedly" keep a team up, then resting 6 first team players is equivalent to a side throwing in the towel!

The Premier League have some strange rules in place, and they only seem to apply them to the teams lower down in the division. A clear example of this is Tevez playing at Man Utd for 2 seasons on the same conditions as at West Ham, but the Premier League gave them approval.

I agree with you that Man Utd fielded a weak side against the Hammers during "that" season, but lets not forget Fulham only stayed up thanks to a win against half a Liverpool side a week or so earlier.

I do not believe West Ham have submitted this claim to shift the blame from the poor on field performances (Zola not being aware of this is a clear indicator), they have submitted it as Fulham are suing them for £500K of lost Premier League earnings. Its a you sue us, we'll sue you, scenario and (unfortunately) I feel its in preparation for a £50m claim should we get relegated.

As a West Ham fan I do not feel we have any "right" to stay in the league, and if we go down this season we deserve it because of our poor performances rather than what other teams did.

Should the Irons go down, I hope we do it with some dignity, and not continue the Sheffield Utd style "its not our fault" finger pointing. If they dont, relegated teams suing other teams and even officials could become common place in our beloved game.

Whilst i agree that there should have been no complaint regarding Fulham i don't agree that we should have had a points deduction

It is blatantly obvious later in your article that you have a dislike of West Ham & i could feel you getting angrier & angrier as if you was ready to explode

Then you go on to say West Ham have form for this having crowed that we were too good to go down in 2002-2003, how do you know this did you do a poll that season outside the stadium lol

You end it with accusing West Ham supporters of claimimg that we have England's academy, while we do say tongue in cheek that "we won the world cup" i have never heard any supporter saying we had England's academy...in saying that we do have an academy to be proud of in recent years thanks to the brilliant job done by Tony Carr & i don't think even with your bias you could disagree with that

Whoever wrote this article is a disgrace to journalism. The facts are so far wide of the mark it is laughable.

I am a West Ham fan and I agree, West Ham need to stop moaning and get on with the rest of the season. If they don't get enough points they will go down.

However, as Liam Barnes knows full well, West Ham DID NOT get fined £25M. They got fined £5.5M and settled with Sheff Utd for the balance.

There is no precedence for a points deduction for West Ham and the breach of the rules was regarding 3rd party involvement of the two Argentines. It has been confirmed that a) West Ham did not cheat and b) the players were not illegal signings.

Get your facts right mate. Man Utd in the last game of the season did rest a few players, as did Sheff Utd at Old Trafford towards the end of the season. As you well know, West Ham were battered that day, but somehow won. Sheff Utd were relegated because they had a poor team and a poor manager whose form collapsed at the end of the season.

Perhaps the author would like to come to Upton park and have a frank discussion with the WH supporters?

The Tevez affair is long gone, get over it.

Wolves have already been fined this season for doing the exact same thing. If West Ham are relegated bt a point or two you might see the same senario as with Sheffield Utd, with West Ham suing Fulham for breaching premiership rules. The precedent was set after the 2007.

Whilst I agree that West Ham's complaint over Hodgson's team selection is frivilous you have completely ignored the fact that Fulham as well as a number of other clubs, players, managers, etc are, equally frivolously, suing West Ham over 'Tevezgate' (an offence for which the FA and Premier League found them 'not-guilty'. The wrong decision, certainly, but the authorities incompetencies are not also West Ham's problem). Are West Ham at fault for Fulham's position in the league at that time? Are they going to be the fall-back excuse for all clubs failures for the next decade or two? When does it all end?

It seems as though you are intent on attacking West Ham and are hiding your dislike behind a one-sided, baseless opinion. For a start you could try re-writing this article without the following words and phrases; 'crowed', 'self-important', 'arrogance, 'deluded', etc. Would Fulham have been such "a well-run club built on solid foundations and with a bright manager taking the Cottagers to the cathedrals of European football against the odds" if they had not taken advantage of Liverpool fielding a weakened team at the end of the same season West Ham 'cheated'?

West Ham's problems are of their own making, on and off the pitch, as are Sheffield United, Hull, Burnley and Portsmouth's issues. Maybe Fulham should remember that during the good times however long they last.

with chelseas current form-7-1 against top 4 spot contenders-aston villa and the 5-0 thumping of struggling portsmouth, and the resting of goal hungry Drogba for a rooneyless manchester, it is obvious that it will be another easy win for chelsea.

I'm glad my input on the J-League is appreciated, it is an area of world football that often gets overlooked.

To be fair, I think Japan will have a tough time of it. The only occasion where they have been able to reach the round of 16 at a World Cup was when they co-hosted it. The support at home was absolutely massive and has to have had a great impact on them.

They lack a genuine goal scorer, and their athleticism is nowhere near the likes of their European cohorts. I'm afraid that without a pointier end to their attack, it's going to be another disappointment for Blue Samurai fans, although I dare say I'll give it a better analysis when the World Cup rosters are announced.

I have to say I agree that Scottish football needs a total revamp. I am a die hard Killie fan and the best game and biggest crowd we've seen at Rugby park over the last 5 years was against our local rivals Ayr United in the Scottish Cup. Instead of playing the same teams week in week out surely an expanded league with 18 teams would make it much more interesting for the fans and the players.
Twizzle are you a European Scout?

This season I don't think a 'lack of depth' is an issue. A typical Villa bench this season has been Brad Guzan, Luke Young, Habib Beye, Nigel Reo-Coker, Fabian Delph, John Carew and Steve Sidwell

O'Neill's decision to pick the same team week in, week out is the reason for any slump.

Many good points raised by Mr Russell. As an ex professional myself and one who is starting out in management with a small club I tink most managers would prefer a brand new structure and not have to play teams so many times every year. Quite obvious with last nights results involving the old firm that something is wrong. Teams know each other too well and staleness has set in.

I think a lot of Japanese stars could have success over in Europe. But when you have it so good at home it's not surprising many don't want to take the risk. Because it is certainly a risk.

Japan are good enough to make an impact at the World Cup, but lack of playing against teams outside Asia could cost them imo.

Can't disagree with anything you say Iain.Everyone is sick of the same type of boring games each week. Scotland seems to be the only country in the world using this league strucure. We cant be right and everyone else is wrong. Lets get a change of structure and go back to more competitive and interesting games. As someone who has watched football in many different countries it is quite clear which system produces the best games and most exciting seasons. But as we know SFA etc will dither about for years and do nothing. So we may e stuck with this dreadful structure and Scottish Football goes further down the pan.
