With England needing a win over Slovenia to ensure their passage into the knockout stages of the World Cup, former captain John Terry is hoping Chelsea team-mate Joe Cole is given a chance in the Three Lions’ starting XI. The former West Ham United standout has not been brought on by coach Fabio Capello since the start of the tournament, but has the backing of one of the most influential figures in the team.

I think Joe can transform our form. We saw at Chelsea that he was a great boost for us when coming back from injury at the right time,” Terry said on the league’s official website. "He got a great goal away from home against Manchester United which proved to be vital.”

With Gareth Barry returning to his holding role in the England midfield, skipper Steven Gerrard has been moved to the left wing, making it difficult for the Chelsea man to be considered for a starting berth.
