Tottenham Hotspur have joined the race for Sporting Lisbon striker Ricky van Wolfswinkel after scouting the Dutchman in Monday’s Lisbon derby.

According to Portuguese daily A Bola, representatives from the White Hart Lane outfit appeared at the Estadio Jose Avalade shortly before kick-off, with checking up on Van Wolfswinkel firmly on their mind.

The striker, who only joined Sporting last summer from FC Utrecht, has attracted glances from a number of English clubs this season due to his goalscoring exploits in the Portuguese top flight.

Manchester United assistant manager Mike Phelan has confirmed that the Red Devils are tracking the 23-year-old, while Liverpool are also believed to have placed Van Wolfswinkel high on their summer agenda.

Now Spurs can be added to that list.

The English club’s scouts watched Van Wolfswinkel score the only goal of the game in a 1-0 win for Sporting; the Holland international converted from the penalty spot in the 18th minute.

Van Wolfswinkel’s buy-out clause in Lisbon is €22M, although his agent has been adamant that the striker could be signed for less than that amount with hardball negotiating this summer.

Sporting though remain keen to keep hold of a player who has turned heads in his first full season in Portuguese football, and is under contract until 2016.
