Manchester United have started to take the first steps towards acquiring Alex Song from Barcelona this coming summer.

The English champions are planning to invest heavily in the upcoming transfer window as they bid to make themselves title contenders once again; Manchester United sit just sixth in the Premier League at present and 15 points behind leaders Chelsea.

He came close to leaving last summer but, having taken advice from friends including Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger, decided to stay put for a further season.

But the defensive midfielder has continued to be on the bench more often than not, starting just eight games in La Liga this term.

His contract with Barcelona runs until 2017, though he recently admitted he could not rule out a return to former club Arsenal at some point.
