Manchester United are ready to make a huge statement in the transfer market by placing a €70m bid for Paris Saint-Germain’s Edinson Cavani.

After a poor last season, the Red Devils are looking to bounce back and have handed considerable transfer funds to Louis van Gaal to reshape the underperforming squad.

The 20-time English champions have identified Cavani as one of their primary transfer targets this summer and are ready to offer as much as €70m to the Parisians for the former Napoli attacker, according to Italian daily Tuttosport

Manchester United are fearful that they may need to pay more if Cavani has a good World Cup, therefore they want to finalise the deal by the end of this week.

Manchester United’s €46m purchase of Juan Mata this January remains their most expensive buy but if Cavani struts into Old Trafford this summer, then he will become the most expensive player in the club’s history.

Cavani joined PSG from Napoli last summer for a transfer fee of €64.5m and has a contract until 2018.

The Uruguayan was unhappy last season at being forced to play second fiddle to Zlatan Ibrahimovic, but PSG remain reluctant to lose him.
