The Manchester United captain lauded Southampton’s defensive organisation, but believes the Red Devils were the better team and should have got something out of the game.

“I think we deserved to win the game, but that's football", Rooney told MUTV.

"Overall we had the better chances and played the better football, but we were punished for not taking our chances.

“I thought we stopped their threats for the majority of the game, but they had one chance in the second half and they took it”, he elaborated.

“We created three great chances late on and we had a few in the first half too.

“Southampton defended well but we were the better team and we feel we deserved more from the game.”
