Former Manchester United midfielder Arnold Muhren feels Memphis Depay needs to add variety to his game to come out of his current rut.

Depay’s form has been on the wane for Manchester United over the last few games and he was taken off at half-time during their 3-0 loss at Arsenal before the international break.

The winger has also received flak for his performances after the Netherlands failed to make it to next summer’s European Championship and with a tough away trip to Everton on Saturday, Louis van Gaal will be hoping his summer signing rediscovers his form as soon as possible.

Muhren, the first Dutchman to wear Manchester United colours in the 1980s, is confident that Depay has the talent, but feels he needs to add more variety to his game to find form, rather than try the same trick over and over again.

“He is a player who can beat people and score goals”, Muhren told Full Time Devils.

“But in my opinion, in the last three four weeks he seems lost. If he is not beating people very easily, he is still trying and sometimes you need to look for combination football.”

The former Red Devil believes the winger needs to be more consistent to carry the burden of expectation at Manchester United and perform at a high level.

“He is only 21; he is in another country, at a bigger club. The fans expect a lot from him, the media expects a lot from him, especially after the way he started.

“He just needs to be consistent.”
