Former Liverpool defender Jamie Carragher does not feel Jose Mourinho is the right fit for the Manchester United manager’s job.

Louis van Gaal’s position has come under intense scrutiny since Manchester United lost to Norwich City last Saturday and there is speculation that the Dutchman is counting down his last days at Old Trafford.

There is also serious speculation that former Chelsea boss Mourinho is being lined up as Van Gaal’s replacement and there are rumours that the club and the Portuguese’s representatives are locked in negotiations.

While Carragher admits that Mourinho’s trophy winning credentials make him a serious contender for the Manchester United job, he feels that there are other facets of the former Chelsea boss’ management style that won’t fit at Old Trafford.

The former Liverpool defender said on Sky Sports Monday Night Football: “Is Jose the perfect fit for United? I say no.

“The reason is that if I have to imagine Manchester United over the last 50-60 years and what they are about; winning trophies, Jose massively ticks that box; but bringing young players through? No. Playing exciting, cut throat football, going for every game? He doesn't tick that box either.”

The Liverpool legend also feels that making Mourinho their manager would make Manchester United look like a club who are desperate to get back to winning trophies and are ready to shed their ethos to do so.

“If that is someone that they go for, I think it’ll show the fear Manchester United's board have of other teams getting away from them.

“There'll be that thought of Pep Guardiola maybe going to Manchester City and they'll be thinking we're actually falling behind.

“They'll forget some of the principles that have made the club over the last 50 or 60 years; and they're just that desperate to get to back winning trophies.”

Mourinho was sacked by Chelsea last week but his representatives have made it clear that the Portuguese is ready to get back into management as soon as possible.
