Liverpool legend Mark Lawrenson has mocked Manchester United despite seeing the Red Devils run out 1-0 winners over the Reds at Anfield on Sunday.

Jurgen Klopp's side were the better team on the day and Manchester United goalkeeper David de Gea netted the Man of the Match award after several crucial stops.

Manchester United grabbed the only goal of the game after a Marouane Fellaini header crashed off the bar and into the path of Wayne Rooney, who made no mistake with a pinpoint shot at goal.

The Red Devils had the win and all three points, but Lawrenson watching on was not impressed and said on LFC TV: "That's one of the poorest Manchester United sides that I've seen. And that's going back [over] 20 years when they had an average team.

"And they've come here and basically done a job on us", he added.

The former defender then took aim at the style of football played under Louis van Gaal and mocked Manchester United for believing they are in with a chance of re-signing Cristiano Ronaldo or hoovering up Gareth Bale.

"I've seen quite a few of their games co-commentating at Old Trafford and it's football by stealth.

"It does make me laugh when they say we're going to sign Ronaldo, we're going to sign Bale – they wouldn't go and play for Man United.

"[They would be] starved. They wouldn't get any chances.

"Ronaldo, he wouldn't have a hissy fit would he?" Lawrenson sarcastically added.

Manchester United have moved to within two points of fourth placed Tottenham Hotspur with their win at Anfield. They could yet play Liverpool again this term, with both teams still involved in the FA Cup and the Europa League.
