FC Utrecht coach Erik ten Hag has insisted that Manchester United winger Memphis Depay still has time on his side, but admits a January move to Everton could be the more logical choice.

Depay has found life suffocating under Jose Mourinho’s management this season and the Manchester United boss has shown very little faith in the Dutch winger since his arrival in the summer.

The 22-year-old has played just 20 minutes of Premier League football over four substitute appearances and his only start this season came in an EFL Cup game against Northampton Town.

Many feel that Depay might have to leave Manchester United in January in order to rescue his career, but Ten Hag, who worked with the winger at PSV Eindhoven, stressed that the Dutchman is still just 22.

He told Voetbal International when it was suggested that Depay’s career needs rescuing: “Rescue? Why?

“Memphis is just 22 and look what he has already achieved.

"Suppose he sits on the bench for one more year, he will still be 23.”

However, he admits that Depay's situation at Manchester United cannot carry on for too long and believes that the winger needs to perform; suggesting a move to Everton in January could be the right move for him.

Ten Hag added: “But for him the situation at Manchester United has carried on for too long and that could be killing him.

“Memphis is an eccentric boy and I am tempted to say that he can make things easier for himself if he goes out and perform.

“Everton seem like the logical choice – they are in the Premier League with a coach who knows him.”
