Arsenal are likely to sack Unai Emery later today and end his 18-month reign as Gunners manager, according to The Athletic.

The north London club extended their winless streak to seven games when they suffered a demoralising defeat at the hands of Eintracht Frankfurt in the Europa League on Thursday night.

The half-empty stadium was an alarming sight and only around 25,000 people turned up to watch the game, which was the lowest attendance since the Emirates opened its gates in 2006.

Arsenal have been insisting that they are prepared to back Emery, but it seems patience has run out at the top level.

And it has been claimed that the club are set to wield the axe today and put the Spaniard out of his misery at the Emirates.

The alarming dip in form and confidence of the Arsenal players has forced the club hierarchy to make a decision on the Spaniard’s future.

Arsenal first-team coach Freddie Ljungberg is likely to take over from Emery on an interim basis as the club look to identify their next permanent appointment.

Emery has long lost a large chunk of the fan base and it is now only a matter of time before he becomes an ex-Arsenal manager.
